Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag revealed a shocking incident involving him and ex-Indian head coach John Wright during the 2004 England tour, where the Indian coach pulled the Indian opener by his collar after being dismissed cheaply in a match.

Sehwag was termed one of the most dangerous openers of his era as he would take on high-quality bowlers from the word go providing a match-needed start for India. In the end, Sehwag ended his career in 2015 with 8586 runs in 104 Tests and 8273 runs in 251 ODIs. He also scored a double century in ODIs and was the first captain to do so, when he scored 219 against West Indies in 2011.

Speaking during the launch of former BCCI General Manager Amrit Mathur’s book: “Pitchside: My Life in Indian Cricket”. Virender Sehwag divulged a falling-out with the former Indian head coach John Wright over his behaviour with him during the 2004 England tour, which he took to the then Indian manager Rajiv Shulka to patch up things between them.

“I was pushed around by John Wright (ex-head coach of team India) in the 2004 England tour. He pulled me by my collar after I got out cheaply. I was very angry and said to Rajiv Shukla, How can a gora hit me? Later Amrit Mathur and Rajiv Shukla got me and Wright to patch up,” said Virender Sehwag.

Virender Sehwag was one of the most aggressive openers in the history of cricket and he had the ability to play all kinds of the format in the same manner. The Right-handed opener had mastered building pressure on the opposition and would take away from the opponents the quick time if he gets settled in the middle and was a key player for India for over a decade or so before announcing his retirement in 2015.

John Wright was India’s first foreign coach. The former New Zealand cricketer formed a brilliant partnership with Indian Skipper S0urav Ganguly as they took Indian Cricket from the low of the match-fixing saga to win matches in the home and overseas conditions.

Wright played a major role in helping the Men in Blue adopt a more aggressive approach and also backed several youngsters like Yuvraj Singh, Mohammed Kaif, and Harbhajan Singh in their young days, who went on to achieve special things for India.
