Jonny Bairstow Dismissal

Australian pacer Mitchell Starc believes that Jonny Bairstow’s controversial dismissal in the 2nd innings was out as his catch of Ben Duckett was not out. The second test of the high-octane Ashes series promised to be more drama on and off the field following the crucial wicket of England’s wicket-keeper on the final day.

Alex Carey collected the short ball bowled by Cameron Green, as Bairstow allowed the pass him on the final delivery of the over. The England wicket-keeper walked off the crease assuming the ball was dead, just before the Australian wicket-keeper directed the ball toward the stumps to dismiss Jonny Bairstow. England team and fans were not happy with the Australian over the dismissal which led to a few heated moments on and off the field.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Mitchell Starc feels that it was the right decision made by the umpire, as the stumping implemented by Alex Carey is out as such as that of the catch of Ben Duckett being adjusted not out on the final session of the fourth day.

“At all times, I thought I had control of the ball. There have been plenty of catches in the past that I think have been very similar and been deemed fair, perhaps not being looked at as closely. To the letter of the law, it’s not out and we move on,” Mitchell Starc said.

Australian players were seen as visibly upset by the decision made by the third umpire, as they felt the Starc was in complete control of the ball before keeping it on the ground. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc discussed the decision with the on-field umpires.
