Shreyas Iyer Reports At The NCA As He Eyes A Comeback Before WTC Final Against Australia

While the cricketing world is gearing up for yet another edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), India batsman Shreyas Iyer has reported at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

The right-handed batsman was to lead Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the forthcoming IPL 2023. However, a recurring lower-back injury has dashed his hopes for the time being. Shreyas Iyer suffered the injury while fielding during the third Test against Australia in Indore earlier this month.

He was subsequently ruled out of the remainder of the third Test, fourth Test as well as the three-match ODI series. In his absence, KKR have appointed middle-order batsman Nitish Rana as their captain for the upcoming season of IPL.

Shreyas Iyer begins treatment:

Having decided against going under the knife for his recurring back issue, Shreyas Iyer has started his treatment  programme at the NCA. As per a report in Cricbuzz, he will take an injection on Thursday (March 29) and his stay at the NCA will be determined by assessment of the staff in Bengaluru.

The report stated that the batsman decided against the surgery for the time being in order to remain available for the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, against Australia in London, in early June (from June 7). A surgery on the back would have meant missing the action for at least six months.

“He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts’ advice,” a source close to Shreyas Iyer was quoted as saying by the outlet.

The ODI World Cup will also be on his mind. India are scheduled to host the marquee event in October-November this year and a surgery would have pretty much jeopardised his World Cup plans. Iyer is an integral part of India’s ODI setup and is likely to play the World Cup provided that he remains fit.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders are hopeful he will be available for their campaign at some stage in the league.

“Shreyas’ absence will make a difference since he is important, but this is truly unfortunate. We are hoping Shreyas will be back very soon and that will make a lot of difference to the team,” coach Chandrakant Pandit said on Tuesday.
