Even before the inaugural edition of the much-anticipated Major League Cricket (MLC), the tournament has landed in a big controversy. The start of the competition is reportedly in danger of getting disrupted due to a sanctioning dispute between USA Cricket and the league organisers.

The tournament is scheduled to be played in July this year with a host of big names from the cricket world already confirmed to feature in it. In the recently-completed MLC Player Draft, the likes of Aaron Finch, Quinton de Kock, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Marsh and several other big names from the cricket world were picked up the franchises.

But just around 3 months before the tournament is scheduled to start, it has found itself in a big controversy. According to ESPNcricinfo, the ICC has taken note of the sanctioning dispute and has asked its members to not issue NOCs to their players until the issue is resolved.

USA Cricket yet to sanction MLC:

USA Cricket, which has faced administrative issues on a number of occasions in the past, has not yet sanctioned either the MLC or Minor League Cricket (MiLC). USA Cricket’s decision, however, did not stop the MLC organisers from holding the player draft and announcing a host of big-name foreign signings. The report stated that the concerns over the tournament are now growing especially as the ICC is currently classifying the events as “disapproved”.

USA Cricket has previously given sanction to MiLC, for both 2021 and 2022, but in a communication recently sent out by the ICC’s operations department to Members, officials have flagged the issue for overseas players wishing to play in both competitions.

“Members may be aware of the following two events that are proposed to be played in the USA,” the ICC said of the events.

“Applications for sanction have been submitted to USA Cricket, but these events have not yet been sanctioned by USA Cricket. Consequently, without a sanction from the host member, both events are currently deemed to be Disapproved Cricket and as such, Members should not issue NOCs to their players to participate in either event,” the statement further said.
