IPL

The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is just a few days away. IPL 2023 is scheduled to begin on March 31 with the clash between defending champions Gujarat Titans and 4-time champions Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

IPL 2023 will be a special edition for the Indian cricket fraternity as the league will make a comeback to its traditional home-and-away format in India for the first time since 2019. The tournament will be played across 12 venues.

What will make the upcoming edition even more special is a bunch of new rules introduced by the BCCI. And one of the most talked-about new rules is the Impact Player rule. The rule, however, is not new in Indian cricket as the BCCI had first introduced it in the domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022.

IPL 2023: Impact Player Rule:

What is the Impact Player rule?

The Impact Player Rule will allow the teams to change one of their players in the Playing XI in the middle of the game during the stipulated time frames. Thanks to the new rule, one substitute player can come in to bat and bowl. The rule is definitely going to help the teams in the absence of allrounders.

Impact player rule – criteria:

In addition to the playing XI, a team will be required to name five substitutes at the toss. They can use any one of the five subs as their Impact Player. As far as nationality of the player is concerned, it will depend on the playing XI named at the start of the game.

If a team names four overseas players in their starting XI, then they can only bring in an Indian as the Impact Player. This is to limit the number of overseas players per game to four per team. However, if a team starts with three or fewer overseas players in their XI, then they can bring in an overseas player as the Impact Player. At the same time, it is also not compulsory to introduce an Impact Player.

What happens to the player who is replaced by the Impact Player?

Once the player is replaced by the Impact player, he will take no further part in the match not even as a substitute fielder.

When can the impact player be introduced?

The impact player can be introduced in the following ways:

  •  Before the start of the innings; or
  • After completion of an over; or
  • In case of a batsman, at the fall of the wicket or the batsman retiring at any time during the over;
  • The bowling team can also get an Impact Player during the fall of the wicket, but that Impact Player will not be permitted to bowl the remaining balls in that over if the wicket has fallen mid over.
  • If a player gets injured, current playing conditions will continue to apply. However, he can be replaced by an Impact Player.

How can the Impact Player be introduced?

To bring the impact player on the field, the captain will have to take permission from the umpire and the umpire will signal indicating that the Impact Player is being introduced. The umpire will cross his hands over his head and close his fists to signal the introduction of an Impact Player.

Is like-for-like replacement mandatory?

While concussion substitute in the game makes it mandatory for the team to have a like-for-like replacement, the impact player rule does not. A batsman can replace a bowler or an all-rounder and vice-versa.

How will the rule apply in case an Impact Player suffers a concussion?

In case an Impact Player suffers a concussion, a like-for-like replacement can be selected after due process.
