Rohit Sharma has once again defended Suryakumar Yadav after the latter’s horror display in the recently-concluded ODI series against Australia.
The right-handed batsman endured one of the most bizarre series as a batsman in the history of the game as he was out for first-ball duck in all the three ODIs. In the first two games, Mitchell Starc pinned him in front of the wicket before Ashton Agar castled him for a duck in the third ODI on Wednesday (March 22).
India ended up losing the series-decider by 21 runs as Australia clinched the three-match series 2-1. Batting first, the visitors were all out for 269. In reply, India started well with the bat with openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill adding 65 runs for the first wicket.

After 35 overs, India were comfortably placed at 185 for 4 before Agar dismissed Virat Kohli (54) and Suryakumar Yadav on successive deliveries. From thereon, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 248 to lose their first ODI series at home since 2019.
Rohit Sharma defends Suryakumar Yadav:
With Suryakumar Yadav failing miserably against Australia, he has been facing criticism from several quarters with many calling for him to be dropped from the ODI team ahead of this year’s World Cup. India skipper Rohit Sharma, however, has once again made it clear that the under-pressure batsman has the full support of the team management.
“He played only three balls in the series. I don’t know how much you can look into it. He got three good balls. Today, (Wednesday) I didn’t think it was that great a ball. He just chose the wrong shot. He should have, maybe, come forward. He knows best,” Rohit Sharma told the media after the third ODI.
“He plays spin so well, which is why we wanted to hold him back and give him that role of last 15-20 overs. But it’s really unfortunate that he could only play three balls in the series. That can happen to anyone. The potential, the quality is always there. He’s just going through that phase right now,” he added.
Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav will soon be in action for Mumbai Indians in the upcoming season of the IPL. Both the batsmen will be looking to regain their best form during the competition.
