The Indian cricket board could soon get richer by at least ₹5000 crores with the addition of two new franchises during the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League.

IPL 2022 is set to be a ten-team affair, with two new franchises added to the group. The change will see the league revert to a ten-franchise competition for the first time since 2011, having been an eight-team event since 2014.
“Any company can buy the bid document paying ₹75 crores. Earlier top brass was thinking about keeping the base price for two new teams at ₹1700 crore but later it was decided to keep the base price at ₹2000 crore,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
The source, who has dealt with the financial side of IPL in the past, said that the BCCI stands to gain at least ₹5000 crores if the bids go as per plan with plenty of large business conglomerates showing active interest in bidding.
“The BCCI is expecting anything in the range of 5000 crores if not more. There will be 74 IPL games next season and it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”
It is learned that only companies with an annual turnover of ₹3000 crores will be allowed to bid for the teams. The BCCI is planning to allow a consortium to bid for teams as it makes the bidding process more vibrant.
“I think more than three business entities won’t be allowed to form a consortium but if three business come together and wants to jointly bid for a team, they are welcome to do so,” he said.
Among the venues where the teams could be based include Ahmedabad, Lucknow, and Pune. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, with bigger capacities, could be the choice for franchises. Some of the names that are doing the rounds include the Adani group, RPG Sanjeev Goenka group, noted pharma company Torrent, and a prominent banker who has shown active interest in buying teams.
IPL 2022 Will See Teams Retain 4 Players
Not just the addition of two new teams, the player retention policies were also on the agenda. The rules of the previous mega-auction stated that the franchisees were able to retain three players before the auction and use the RTM (right-to-match) card for two more players, where the teams would match the bid price of another team, who has bid the highest for their player.
A few weeks ago, it was said that teams would be allowed to keep 3 Indians and 1 foreign player or 2 Indians and 2 foreign players. However, since new teams are coming in, arguments were made stating it would be unfair to them if they didn’t have access to the best players.
Each franchise will be allowed to retain four players, but with the following conditions – they can either retain three Indians and one overseas player or two Indians and two overseas players.
During the meeting, the members zeroed in on the decision of allowing the franchises to retain only three players, that t will allow the two new teams also to have some marquee players. While some franchises wanted the retentions up to four, the BCCI may not allow the same to be done. There is still a lack of clarity on the availability of the RTM card, but apparently, it is going to stay.
The second phase of the 2021 edition of the IPL will begin on September 19 with the high-octane clash between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings. The remaining 31 matches of IPL 2021 will be played across 27 days and will begin on September 19, with the Chennai Super Kings taking on defending champions Mumbai Indians. The IPL 2021 second leg will be played across three cities with 13 matches in Dubai, 10 in Sharjah, and 8 in Abu Dhabi.
